BREEDING DUCKS DOWN BUT STILL ABOVE LONG-TERM AVERAGE
07/16/2008
Estimate is 9 percent below last year but 11 percent above long-term average
The preliminary estimate of total ducks from the 2008 Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey was just over 37 million, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). This is a 9 percent decline from last year's estimate but still 11 percent greater than the 1955-2007 average. In the U.S. and Canadian prairies, population estimates of many species declined, while populations increased in the boreal forest to the north, likely reflecting that birds flew over the prairies because of drier habitat there...

Hunters Bagged 630,000 Roosters in Iowa
07/14/2008
DES MOINES - More than 109,000 pheasant hunters harvested 630,000 roosters in 2007, keeping Iowa among the national leaders in pheasant hunting. The harvest estimates are based on a survey of small game hunters. The 2007 pheasant harvest was a 16 percent decline from 2006, when hunters harvested nearly 750,000 roosters.
But as Iowa continues to lose critical Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) habitat, it will not likely provide pheasant hunting and harvests that was experienced in the 1980s and 1990s, with more than 200,000 hunters and harvests topping 1 million roosters...

Gun Law Changes!!!
06/26/2008
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.
The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision went further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact...

Midwest Quail habitat disappearing; CP-33 is the solution
06/20/2208
Conservation officials say this federal program gives farmers an economically practical alternative to plowing under wildlife habitat.
JEFFERSON CITY-The upward trend in corn prices is prompting some farmers to bulldoze brushy fencerows and plant marginal land around field edges. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency offers an alternative that helps farmers improve their bottom line while letting them keep habitat for quail and other wildlife...

KANSAS CROWING SURVEY SUGGESTS MORE NESTING PHEASANTS IN 2008
06/19/2008
Thirty-five percent increase rangewide means more nesting birds; production outlook hopeful
Each spring, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) conducts a survey of pheasants throughout their statewide range. As the mating season approaches, roosters increase crowing, and KDWP staff drive routes, stop at established stations, and listen for birds. Data from this survey, combined with the summer brood count survey in August, helps determine the outlook for the fall pheasant crop. A windy spring made surveying difficult this year, but last year's production combined with good winter carry-over appears to reveal an increased number of breeding pheasants over last year...

South Dakota Pheasants and Other Upland Birds in Peak of Nesting Season
06/18/2008
HURON, S.D.-With the prairie winds waving around waist-high grass that has benefited from above-normal precipitation this spring, many nesting birds including pheasant, grouse and waterfowl are at the peak of their critical nesting and brood rearing time.
"Although it has been cooler and wetter than average along with localized hail and flooding, much of the state's grassland areas are looking very favorable from a nesting and brood-rearing habitat perspective," said S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department Senior Upland Game Biologist Chad Switzer of Huron. "However, when it comes to our pheasant reproduction, we won't know the impact of these weather conditions until our staff completes the annual pheasant brood surveys this August...

"From Kansas City, you have to travel a long way to find a good prairie dog town, but if you like shooting high powered rifles, its' great fun. It was our first prairie dog trip, and we had a great time. We plan to do it again later this year. As soon as I can negotiate it with my wife!"
